How To Crucify The Flesh

We've heard a lot about crucifying the flesh, but just a few of us know what it really means. Today, we will learn the meaning of crucifying the flesh

The flesh is the carnal nature of man which operates through the five carnal senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste. It processes every information it receives through these senses; it  communicates it to man suggests he acts on them.

Obviously, the suggestions of the flesh are often sinful; and the direct opposite of what God expects from us!

The Flesh is rebellious. It hates everything that is spiritual. It neither obeys God nor His Word. The desires of the Flesh are always the direct opposite of what the Word of God commands a Christian to do. The Bible says that the Flesh is in enmity against God (Romans 8:7).

The flesh is the carnal nature of man, and it has never been in God's program for man to be ruled by his carnal nature. Before the Fall, the original state of man has always been that of holiness. Carnality is a corruption of this original, holy nature of mankind.

Before the fall of man, Adam and Eve were fully-functional spirit beings who were less aware of their carnal nature but much aware of the spiritual. This was evident in the fact that Adam was able to name the animals without asking God what their name was.

Adam was able to instantly discern the mind of God and name the animals. The flesh didn't help him achieve that. It was his spirit which was connected to the mind of God

Adam and Eve had no problems living the Garden for years without wearing clothes. It was the moment the flesh got activated that they realized they were naked.

The resultant effect was that they became carnal and lost their connection with God. Consequently, they were expelled from the Garden!

God created man to be a spirit being, the flesh was only given for his covering and adaptation to the earth realm. Hence, the flesh shouldn't be given more attention than the spirit of man.

Mam wasn't created to be led by the Flesh, or to live and act according to the biddings of the flesh, but by the Spirit. Living by the Flesh always results to both spiritual and physical death—just as we saw in the case of Adam and Eve.

Romans 8:13 KJV
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

After the flesh got activated, Adam and Eve did not just suffer loss of their connection with the Father. They also lost their spiritual heritage; that delegated authority God gave them over all things in the earth realm. Apparently, they experienced a spiritual death right before the physical one!

Living according to the flesh brings about eternal separation from God. That is the worst that can happen to anyone who decides to abandon the spiritual to dwell in sin!

Why We Should Crucify The Flesh

The Adamic, carnal nature did not just end with them. It transcended generations after them. By default all, humans carry the DNA of Adam until they get saved.

Even after salvation and reception of the Holy Spirit, the carnal nature does not dramatically disappear. The Christian has to submit to the Holy Spirit as He works on them to get rid of this carnal nature.

Galatians 5:24
Those that belong to Christ have crucified the flesh, together with its lusts.

That being said, the first enemy we need to defeat isn't the Devil, but the Flesh. The enemy finds his foothold faster in the lives of Christians who haven't crucified their Flesh. Adam and Eve activated the Flesh and died, we must deactivate it so that we will live!

1. Peace With God

The need to crucify the flesh can not be overemphasized. First and foremost, we must be at peace with God. The flesh is God's enemy, and if we continue doing according to its biddings, we are literally fighting against God.

2. To Ensure Total Obedience To God

The will of the Lord is for us to live a life of total obedience to Him, and that, every genuine Christian must attain before His imminent return. There are no alternatives to this.

3. To Have A Fulfilled Destiny

The Flesh fights against the fulfilment of destiny. That is one of the reasons why it is also the enemy of God. The LORD wants to give us a great future(Jeremiah 29:11), but that doesn't happen while we still allow our flesh to bring us to a place of rebellion against Him.

4. To Walk In The Fullness Of What God Has FornUs

It is obedience that touches God's heart and opens doors for us, not rebellion. The flesh prevents us from walking in the fullness of all that the Lord has in store for us.

1 Peter 4:2 That he should not live the rest of his lifetime in the flesh according to the lusts of men, but to the desire of God.

Total submission to God is the key that unlocks doors to destiny!

Ponder on these questions:

  • Do you really desire to walk in the fullness of all that the LORD has for you?
  • Do you desire to have a fulfilled destiny and live a fulfilled life on Earth?
  • Are you determined to succeed in life and ministry?

If your answers are yes, just start by crucifying the flesh.

How To Crucify The Flesh Daily

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:31 that he dies daily.

1. How did dying daily become the lifestyle of Apostle Paul?

That definitely did not happen by His own strength, but he learned to let the desires of the Spirit of God rule over the desires of his Flesh. He dwelled in the Word and prayer daily, till he was empowered to live out the extraordinary life!

2. Harness God's Grace Through The Spirit

The ability to overcome anything that stands between us and God comes through the Grace of God, made available to us through the indwelling Spirit.

We don't need multiple deliverance sessions and casting out of demons. We need to let the Spirit who lives in us to work on us! We've been given Grace(Ephesians 4:7), plus God's Word and Prayer! These alone can do wonders in our lives.

Zechariah 4:6-7 And he answered and said to me, these are the Lord's words to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. [7] What are you, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel you will become a plain: and he will bring down the headstone shouts of Grace, grace to it.

No mountain standing between us and God is too high for us to overcome. We only need to let God have His way in us and we'll bring down the last stone with shouts of Grace and Grace to it!
